Our Mission: The mission
of the Society of
Translators and
Interpreters
of British Columbia is to
promote the interests of translators and interpreters and to serve the
public by applying a Code of Ethics that all members are bound to comply
with and by setting and maintaining high professional standards through
education and certification.
The Society of Translators and Interpreters of British
Columbia (S.T.I.B.C.) was incorporated in 1981. It is a non-profit
professional association and an affiliate of the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and
Interpreters Council (CTTIC), the umbrella organization for the
associations of translators and interpreters in British Columbia, Alberta,
Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Québec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia,
Newfoundland and Labrador, the Yukon and Nunavut. CTTIC is a member of the
FIT (Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs).
Most of the above organizations have websites, and you can access them
via our Links page.
The goals of the S.T.I.B.C. are to promote the interests of
translators and interpreters
in British Columbia and to serve the public by providing
both a Code of Ethics
that members of the S.T.I.B.C. agree to observe and a
system of certification
for translators and interpreters. Our Certified professionals
benefit from
occupational title protection in British Columbia.
The Society is governed by an elected Board of Directors.
The Society's membership consists of approximately 312 Founding and
Certified translators and interpreters, certified in over 80 language
combinations (translators: 60 unique combinations; court interpreters: 18; conference
interpreters: 4), and approximately 144 Associate members, as of June 2004.
S.T.I.B.C. is not a translation agency. Please DO NOT send documents to the S.T.I.B.C. office for translating.
