Part 1: CANADIAN STYLE GUIDE - 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
This workshop will help you gain familiarity with the Canadian Style Guide, a free, online style guide that, when used properly, brings consistency and professionalism to your translations.
In this interactive and hands-on workshop, you will gain insight into some of the intricacies and complexities of style and grammar, and you'll test your new skills with the following:
- quotation marks
- and commonly misused and confused words.
Additional Handouts with Quick Reference Guides will be provided.
Facilitator: Coreen Boucher
For the last 5 years, Coreen Boucher has specialized in theses, dissertations, and academic articles in the APA style and in technical editing and plain language for business clients using Canadian style. Before that, she spent 7 years teaching grammar and writing to home-schooled children and youth. She studied editing and plain language at SFU and currently studies Public Relations at UVic. She owns CoBo Communications.
Part 2a: Orientation for Written Components of the Interpreting Exams - 12:30 PM to 1:15 PM
This session is only for candidates who registered to write the written component of the Community, Medical and Court Interpreting examinations.
Part 2b: Orientation for Oral Components of the Interpreting Exams - 1:15 PM to 2:00 PM
This session is only for candidates who registered to take the oral component of the Community, Medical and Court Interpreting examinations.
Part 2c: Translation Exam Orientation - 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
The Candidates Guide for the written translation exam is reviewed and general tips are provided in this session.
Facilitator: Bekircan Tahberer
Certified Translator, former STIBC staff member.
Part 3: Specific Language Workshop - 3 PM to 4:30 PM
Participants will split in groups according to their language combinations and work with a certified colleague on a sample text. Candidates and mentors will be provided with a text to translate before the workshop.
Please note that the orientation workshops from 12:30 pm to 3 pm are offered at no-charge to members who have already registered for the exam. The other workshops are open to all members and the public and are priced according to STIBC event pricing policy. Please contact the office if you have any questions.
